. :Environmental Programs: .

The physical environment remains a focus of the programmes of the Chamber as this is the basis of the economy of the area. The erosion of the beach is still a major concern and efforts continued to address this.

This year saw the further development of the Negril Recycling Centre into an Integrated Environmental Facility which is a model that can be replicated.

.: Beach Regeneration :.

Significant steps are now being taken to address the problemof Beach Erosion which continues to threaten the tourism product and the economy of Negril. The Member of Parliament, Dr. Wykeham McNeil appointed a twelve member committee consisting of Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society, NEPA, NCC, NEPT, NGIALPA, JHTA, Community Representative, to address the situation. The committee chaired by Mr. Daniel Grizzle has begun the necessary work.

The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) has approved the proposal for a study to find the most suitable solution to the problem and as a result the community has signed off on an agreement to implement the outcome of the study.

.: Recycling Centre :.

Repairs to the Recycling Centre have been completed and although all the machines have not yet been replaced, the Centre is now receiving deliveries of bottles and cardboard from hotels.

Funds for the re-institution of the recycling programme was garnered through a proposal sent to the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ). The Project was approved in February 2006 to the tune of J$3,229,000.00 and the first disbursement of funds has been received.

All utilities have been fully restored and the Baler (used to compress paper including cardboard) has been delivered and will be operational by April 1. It is expected that the Glass Crusher will arrive and be up and running by the end of April 06. An industrial shredder will be a new addition to the operations of the Centre and should be in place also by end of April.

Support the Greening of Negril Recycling programme, send us your cardboard and clear glass bottles! We will let you know when we will be ready to receive shredded paper and your old newspapers.

.: Wetlands Restoration :.

This programme was suspended as it was understood that it would be addressed by the Negril Area Environment Protection Trust (NEPT) and the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society (NCRPS) through the Caribbean Regional Environmental Programme (CREP ). The work done through the National Water Commission Advisory and Monitoring Committee has been made available to those organizations.
