. : Schools and Education : .

Education has been at the Centre of the Chamber’s operations since its inception. It has given support to schools in terms of physical upgrading as well as through programmes on values and attitudes as well as environmental education. There continued to be the forging of partnerships in order to strengthen the range of activities.

.: Educational and Social Centres :.

The lack of utilization of the land donated by Mr. William Cargile III for the establishment of the Educational and Social Centre is a matter of concern and the donor has been in discussions with the administration to ascertain the plans for the property. This is an asset that has the potential for income generation and this must be given priority in its development. The proposal will be reviewed with a view to establishing the way forward.

.: Schools :.

The Chamber maintained its interest in the schools in the area. A major project to upgrade the Negril All Age School was initiated by the Rock House Hotel and fully supported by the Chamber. President Cliff Reynolds led the process, identifying other partners and securing donations and services. The renovated school was officially opened on October ---by the Mission Director of USAID, Miss Karen Turner. This is a welcome improvement which will have a positive impact on the delivery of education in Negril and has again demonstrated the possibilities of partnerships in the development of the area.

Towards the end of the year, the Urban Development Corporation invited the Chamber to establish a partnership in a programme to promote values and attitudes in basic schools. This will be addressed in the new year.

We again commend Mrs. Gail Jackson for her consistent support for the schools in the area and to Mrs. Sharon Chambers for her work in areas of values and attitudes in many of these institutions.
