.: NCC Negril Greening Project. :.

The Greening of Negril Prroject began in 2000 and is deigned to demonstrate the use of the
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) tool to 'green' the destination with the objective of
achieving the objective of certification as a Green Destination.A board based Committee led by the Negril Chamber of Commerce oversees the project which
consist of five main components.

.: A Re-Cycling Centre :.
The Recycling Centre was established to provide a means of reducing the volume of materials being transported to the public waste disposal site in Retirement St. James. Through a partnership with Garbage Disposal and Sanitation Systems (GDSS) glass bottles and cardboard are collected and processed for export.     The recycling center in located in Whitehall.         on land leased from Ministry Of Water & Housing.Bottles, cardboard and shredded paper are         delivered to the Centre by hotels, restaurants, and individuals.Bottles are crushed and deposited in a special       container which Is collected by Garbage Disposal      and Sanitations Systems (GDSS) for export.Cardboard is baled and is also exported         The construction of the Recycling Plant and the purchase of the equipment were funded by the Environment Foundation, The Japanese Government and the USAID’s Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project.
  .: A Solid Waste Management Project :.
n 1999,USAID’s Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) held a consultation with the Negril Community to arrive at a consensus on the projects needed for the improvement. It was agreed that the solid waste management project should be implemented as a part of the larger Greening of Negril Programme. The National Solid Waste Authority was a major partner in the project and the waste collection schedule was improved. Illegal dumps in several communities were cleaned. These were replaced by skips provided by CWIP.      The Ministry of Local Government assigned a compactor      which had the facility for the emptying of skips. With the continuing need to address the issue of Solid Waste, the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica approved the establishment of a compositing unit for schools and the community.

  .: Beautification :.
Beautification was an intregal part of The Greening of Negril Programme and this was focused on public spaces. It involved:The cutting of verges and the placement of plants in the public park in order to improve the beautification project, the Negril Chamber of Commerce proposed Establishment of a Plant Nursery and this began in 2004 with a grant from the EFJ.Another component is the Aloe Vera Project which was established in 2001, in association with the Negril Hair Braiders Asssociation, a member of the Negril Chamber of Commerce. This Project was undertaken under the CWIP Project and is now located at the Recycling Centre. The aloe vera is offered for sale to the braiders and wider community.PUBLIC EDUCATION
  • Schools
  • Visits to Recycling Center
  • Community
Education programs have been supported over the years by the environmental Foundation of Jamaica, USAID’s Costal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) and tha Canada Jamaica Green Fund.WASTEWATER TREATMENTThe treatment of the water is critical for the preservation of health and the environment. The Negril community has always taken an interest in the proper disposal of waste and therefore the management, operation and maintenance of these facilities.Throught the intervention of CWIP the National Water Commision Advisory and Monitoring Committee was established. The main objective was to promote the concept of private sector participation in wastewater management. It has representation from community groups and government agencies with responsibility for wastewater issues and the environment. This is fully supported by the National Water Commision (NWC) and the Committee is chaired by senior manager of the organization. The Commettee monitors the operations of The pumping stations. And the treatment Plant and gives feedback to NWC from the wider community. The Negril Chamber of Commerce serves as the Secretariat for this Committee another wastewater treatment facility is situated at the Negril Recycling Centre. This evappo transpiration system was designed suit the condition of a high water tanle and to prevent percolation of treated sewage effluent to the ground water. It includes :A combination system of a three chamber septic tank which receives sewage from the bathroom. It reduces the organic load and removes solids in the first step, and continues the process of treatment in the second and third chambers. The effluent which flows over from the tank is sent to a sealed reed bed and is used to water the plants. This results in an uptake of the nutrients. The combined system in environmentally sound because it results in the reduction of pollution and reuses the water and nutrients. This system was installed with funding from Canada/ Jamaica Green Fund.

  .: Resource Management :.
The conservation of water and energy is a feature of the Greening of Negril Programme and this has been demonstrated at the Recycling Centre.

Water Harvesting

Water harvesting is a traditional practice that is used to capture rainfall for use in households or other areas. It is considered an environmentally sound practice, which optimizes the use of natural resources in an environmentally friendly way.

Gutters are used to collect the rain water from the roof of the building.

This is stored in a concrete tank then piped for use in the operations if the Centre. Water from the storage tank is also used

domestically and supplies the basins, shower and toilet in the bathroom.

The harvesting system was made possible with funding from the Canada/ Jamaica Green Fund.

This system was expanded with the allocation of tanks provided by CWIP. Four 750 gallon tanks collect the harvested water for general

use at the Centre. Two 500 gallon tanks are supplied with water used for the irrigation of plants. The building which houses the bathroom

was constructed with funding from the Canada/ Jamaica Green Fund.

The exterior of the building is painted with radiant barrier paint which reflects the sun’s rays and reduces heat accumulation by 40%. Energy saving light bulbs are used throughtout the building and these reduce

lighting cost by up to 75%. These were donated by Ecological Technologies (Eco-Tec). The bathroom is outfitted mainly by Eco-Tec with two faucets aerators, a low flow showerhead and water saving flapperless toilet. These conservation measures will reduce water

consumption by atleast 30%.
